We then removed the existing aid to navigation tower; drilled an 18” diameter rock socket, 21 feet deep; then grouted in a 22 foot, 10” diameter, schedule 120 column with a heavy steel frame base. The steel base was fabricated in our workshop in Clayton to support the reinstalled aluminum aid to navigation tower. The rocks and stone act as a barrier helping to prevent erosion from the water. We also have several sectional barge platforms set up with 21’ long ramps to allow for easy roll on/roll off of equipment, cargo, and materials. These barge platforms can be spudded in place and have a shallow draft allowing access to difficult to reach locations. An interesting element of this project was the need to protect an endangered Blandings Turtle that has a habitat at the dredge site. Trimble® GPS equipped long reach excavator we placed approximately 6,000 tons of stone in the Black River and Chaumont Bay to create fish spawning beds. The target species for Chaumont Bay are lake whitefish and cisco fish, both of which are prey fish, and in Black River the target species are lake sturgeon and walleye.
