We then removed the existing aid to navigation tower; drilled an 18” diameter rock socket, 21 feet deep; then grouted in a 22 foot, 10” diameter, schedule 120 column with a heavy steel frame base. The steel base was fabricated in our workshop in Clayton to support the reinstalled aluminum aid to navigation tower. We also have several sectional barge platforms set up with 21’ long ramps to allow for easy roll on/roll off of equipment, cargo, and materials. These barge platforms can be spudded in place and have a shallow draft allowing access to difficult to reach locations. Given the depth of water, the extent of the drilling, and the unpredictable and strong current, we developed a four point anchoring plan with four winches set up on our barge. This allowed the barge to remain on station for drilling, grouting and diving operations. Working with Hunt Underwater Specialties, we were able to temporarily patch the hull and assist in dewatering efforts to keep her afloat. We also performed the initial pollution response, placing oil containment and absorbent boom around the vessel and oil absorbents in the vessel’s holds to minimize the environmental impact. Finally, we completed the dead ship tow to Kingston, Ontario with our tugs Seaway Maid and Seaway Patricia.
