Fish Spawning Bed Construction, the Black River & Chaumont Bay, NY

Owner: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation & U.S. Geological Survey

Prime: Seaway Marine Group, LLC

Using our Trimble® GPS equipped long reach excavator we placed approximately 6,000 tons of stone in the Black River and Chaumont Bay to create fish spawning beds. The target species for Chaumont Bay are lake whitefish and cisco fish, both of which are prey fish, and in Black River the target species are lake sturgeon and walleye.

Lake Trout Habitat Rehabilitation Project, Brocton Shoal, Lake Erie, NY

Owner: NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Lake Erie Fisheries Research Unit

Prime: Seaway Marine Group, LLC

Seaway Marine Group was contracted to work on this experimental habitat reclamation project. Seaway successfully designed, fabricated and deployed a high-velocity jetting nozzle at two test sites removing silt, sand and dreissenid mussel shells covering the rock piles. DEC staff deployed an underwater. drone to evaluate and adjust the method in real time. These sites lie in 50-60 feet of water, greatly increasing the difficulty of the work and making the resulting clean rock that much more impressive. This habitat rehabilitation project is the latest of several important DEC initiatives to identify, assess, and restore lake trout spawning habitat. The success of this high-velocity jetting method on Brocton Shoal provides an effective option for future reclamation work.
